Schoolwork week 10 ~ Much Ado About Nothing

1. Find out when the play, “Much Ado About Nothing”, was written and describe the storyline.

Much Ado About Nothing, was written in 1598-99, by William Shakespeare. In the novel, Beatrice and his daughter Hero are speaking with a messenger, who has come to tell Leonato that Don Pedro, the Prince of Aragon, is visiting Messina following some sort of battlem, and that he will be bringing a brave young soldier. Antonio tells his Brother Leonato about how he overheard Claudio admitting he loves Hero and wants to marry her. Don John, the brother of Don Pedro, with his followers, Borachio and Conrade, saying that he feels unwelcome in Messina and plans to cause unrest.

Identify some of the main characters, dividing them into two groups: ‘good’ and ‘evil’.

Good:

Claudio,
Hero,
Don Pedro,
Leonato,
Verges,
Antonio,

Evil:

Don John,
Margaret,
Borachio,
Conrad,
Dogberry,

Do some of them change for better or worse (give an example or two)? Do they change back?

Yes, Claudio changes for the worse and becomes mean and selfish, but soon realizes and changes back.

3. What seem to be the play’s messages? List below. Do you think the play is relevant today?

Don't listen to every thing you hear, there are two sides to every story.

Yes, in a way i think the play is relevant in todays society, and the message is also relevant with all the fighting and arguing that happens in everyday life, it is good to understand that there are two messages to every story.

4. What is the difference between classical tragedy and comedy? Into which category (if either)does this play seem to fit?

Classical Tragedy:

1) Emphasizes human suffering
2) Ends with rigid finality
3) Moves with solemnity and foreboding
4) Emotional Response (pity and fear)
5) Identification with the hero
6) Laments man's fate
7) Criticizes h ubri s , self-delusion,

Classical Comedy:

1) Emphasizes renewal of human nature
2) Moves from rigidity to freedom
3) Plays with prevailing high spirits
4) Intellectual response (ridicule and absurdity)
5) Scorn/approval of protagonist/others
6) Celebrates life
7) Criticizes folly, self-delusion, and complacency
({Acessed 17/9/09} http://web.cn.edu/kwheeler/documents/Tragedy_Comedy.pdf)

I think the book falls into the catergory of classical comedy, because it is obvious that the novel, and movie is a comedy.

Marriage was often a political affair; courtly love was "dating" of a sort outside of marriage. Traditional courtly love consisted of the man writing poetry and such for the woman and giving her undue attention, while the woman pretends not to notice in the least. If the woman appreciated the man's advances, she would give him a token of affection, such as a glove or a handkerchief. This would then be carried with the man into battle or competitions as a good luck charm. Ideally, the courtship was never consummated, though the reality was often the opposite, especially as the level of the participants in society rose.

Social etiquette in Elizabethan England:
Elizabethan women would be taught a range of subjects and skills. Manners and etiquette were of prime importance, including how to curtsey. Music, dancing , riding and archery were also taught. These young girls were expected to act as servants to the Ladies of the castle - their duties would be to look after clothes and the assist ladies with dressing and coiffure. Women from the lower classes were also expected to obey the male members of their families without question. All Elizabethan women would be expected to marry, and would be dependant.

Homework week 8 ~ Co-curricular reflection

For term 1, the QGSSSA sport that i signed up for was Touch. I have done touch since i was about 9, and it is my favorite sport. When i signed up this year i was so excited :) When trials came around i knew i would be on the B's team, and i was happy with that. We had a really good season of touch, and i was really happy when i got voted as captain of the team. Our team was undefeated for most of the season, loosing only one game. We made it to the grand finals, which was in Brisbane. It was the longest, hardest, most hectic game i have ever played. We went in to drop off, and with only three players left on the field we scored a try. It was the best moment, all of the St Hilda's teams where watching us, because they had all finished their games. I was so happy that we had finished of the season with a win :) I can't wait until next year when we sign up for touch again. I encourage everyone to do Touch, because it is such a fun game, and you get to meet so many new people. It is really good :)

Homework week 7 ~ Book review

I am currently reading a book called Specky Magee "and the great footy contest."

I am really enjoying the book, i never thought it would be a book that i would like, but i became interested in it straight after reading the first page. I found the book when i was looking through the draws in my brothers room :| and gathered together the rest of the series. I am now half way into the book and can not put it down. The book is about a boy "Specky" and his school Aussie-rules team, and the troubles that they come across. Specky and his team mates are shocked to hear that their coach is going to retire, and they seem even more shocked to find out who their new coach is. They cant believe that they are going to be coached by a lady for the rest of the season. Mean while, specky cant stop thinking about a girl he met, who also, is obsessed AFL.
